Have you ever wanted to travel into space? From the time I was a young child, I could imagine nothing more wondrous or exciting than to venture beyond the grip of Earth. Humans have only stepped on the Moon, but the Universe still beckons to us, full of mystery and promise.
Will humans soon step into the splendor of space?
A company known as Mars One may have opened up a way for specific brave souls to see the beauty of the extraterrestrial realms first hand. Mars One is designing a one-way trip to the Red Planet — that’s right, no coming back to Earth. Those who make the journey will have to make Mars their new home! The Mars One plan is to send a handful of people at first, then more every two years, assuming success. It sounds like something from a Kim Stanley Robinson novel, doesn’t it?
Could the barren Martian landscape be humanity’s next home?
The technical details for how this could work are scarce. Some are saying its a hoax. I personally think this could be legit: The private sector has, after all, done some great things in the aerospace arena. An interesting tidbit is Celestic, Inc [they’ll send your ashes into space], but with the lack of funding going towards agencies like NASA, the private sector could be our best chance to explore the stars. Only one company so far that I’m aware of — Space Adventures — has actually sent private citizens into space, but I’m sure others [like Virgin Galactic] aren’t far behind.
If you had a chance to join the Mars One team, would you take the 6 month journey to the Red Planet?
Space cadets — intrepid explorers!
